Permission to prioritise you: granted
The new year is upon us.
A time of new plans, fresh starts and exciting projects.
What do you have on the horizon?
My guess is that whatever it is, it’s going to be an adventure. That it’ll take you to places you haven’t been before. That the heights will be dizzying and the view breathtaking.
The thing is, big adventures require lots of energy – and not just the kind you get from a power bar. Mental energy. Emotional energy. Reserves that have taken a battering over the last nine months.
Novelty, even novelty that we actively seek out, can be as draining as it is uplifting. So here’s a question that’s been ringing around my head in recent weeks:
When will you make space for you?
Rest and recharge. Take care of what you need, not only what you have to do. Those 2021 plans aren’t going anywhere without your vision, your spark, and your you-ness. Do us all a favour: rest up and come back ready to light 2021 on fire. After the year we’ve had, I think we’re gonna need what you’ve got cooking more than ever.
A brilliant idea I wanted to share
Recently, I caught up with a fellow creative. The subject of Christmas holidays came up and he said that the business would be closed for two weeks over the festive period. Not only that, he and his business partner decided that they’d close for a third week at the start of January to work on their own business.
I thought it was genius! And so, I am unashamedly stealing the idea. I will be doing the exact same thing. I have so many plans and adventures for 2021, and I can’t think of a better way to answer my question of how to make space for me, and ensure I can deliver what I have in mind for you.
As a good friend and a wise individual said:
“When we prioritise ourselves and meet our needs, it gives permission for others to do the same.”
In sharing this idea, I hope you take the cue to prioritise yourself. Even if it’s only for an hour.
Your words matter,
Laura
The Weekly Writing Reflection
Welcome!
Each week I share an inspirational quote and a writing prompt. The idea is for you to spend a moment doing some active reflection through writing.
Here’s your quote for this week...
‘Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop.’
- Ovid
And your writing prompt, if you’d like to use one:
I find rest…
What’s Caught My Eye This Week
Something a little different this week.
I’ve found myself consuming too much stuff lately, and so I’ve made a conscious decision not to send you down any internet rabbit holes. It’s my small attempt to quiet the noise of life for a moment.
There’s only one thing anyone needs to read in December, and that’s A Christmas Carol. Every December I revisit the tale and every year it grows more and more delightful. If you’ve never read the book, and even if you have, I heartily encourage you to put down the iPad, the phone, close the laptop, ditch the blue light and pick up a copy.
I’ve had mine since I was young enough to still write my name inside the front cover of books. Just look at that joined-up writing. Top marks, eh?
Happy reading!
